Citizens in Transition Project
At the end of May 2008, fifteen local youth were given disposable cameras and asked to visually document their lived experience of the Mount Pleasant commercial area through photography.
The intent of this documentation process was to better inform the City of Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant Community Planning Program by ensuring that youth views would be incorporated. The Mount Pleasant Community Planning Program began in 2007 and is expected to end in 2009 with a Draft Community Plan.
Phase One: Over the course of two workshops, participants were involved in dialoguing about their photos through a method known as “Photo Voice”. This method engages people in recording and reflecting on their community’s strengths and concerns.
Phase Two: After collecting data from the summer outreach, participants were involved in a visioning process. The Youth Action Team (YAT) set out a series of 20 principles and priorities for their community based on comments collected from the photo survey.
Out of this multi-phased project participants were then invited to act as mentors and participants in a youth film project being run out of Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House that builds upon the findings and outcomes of this process. The project has been a labour of love for community developer Thor Larson and a partnership between Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, Broadway Youth Resource Centre and various City of Vancouver staff.
